After the great success of SURENA II, university of Tehran has been assigned as the implementer for the third generation of the Iranian humanoid robot project through a national program for Development of Applied Bio-inspired Robotic Systems. Center of Advanced Systems and Technologies (CAST) which is the merge of Center for Advanced Vehicles (CAV), implementer of SURENA I and II projects, and Advanced Dynamic and Control Systems Laboratory (ADCSL), has been in charge of realizing SURENA III. The specifications of the third generation of Iranian national humanoid robot show great technical improvements with respect to the last generations. SURENA III with 190 cm height is one of the tallest humanoid robots have ever been realized around the globe. Despite the last generations, SURENA III is capable of intelligently performing various scenarios. The robot is able to interact with its environment through vision and speech (in Persian), and to perform consistent tasks based on the visual and audial signals.

This robot is not only capable of recognizing faces and objects, but also can walk on flat and uneven terrains. The SURENA III walking speed has greatly increased with respect to its last generation (7 times). Also, stair and slope ascending and descending, as well as online detection of the obstacles with various heights and climbing on them are some advances of this new generation of Iranian national humanoid robot. This generation of SURENA is a symbol of great enhancement of robotics knowledge in Iran which has been conducted under supervision of Professor Aghil Yousefi-koma (faculty member, department of mechanical engineering, university of Tehran). This project has been carried out by a team consisting of 70 researchers and experts in electronic, mechanical design, dynamic-control and computer science fields, as well as 8 faculty members from Sharif University of Technology, Khaje Nasir University of Technology, Tarbiat Moderres University, Shiraz University and Tehran University. Besides, two research contracts have been signed in collaboration with two trading companies, active in the area of robotics, for the project accomplishments.

Achievements

  • Gathering a team including 70 researchers, expert in the field of robotics, as well as 8 faculty members from top-rank Iran universities
  • Holding consultation meetings with the advisory board (faculty members)
  • Holding a national contest for selecting the best robot body cover conceptual design
  • Enhancing greatly the robot features with respect to the last version (the new version is 7 times as fast as the last version), and improving the technical knowledge in the robotics field in Iran
  • Adding the capability of performing various maneuvers to the current version , i.e. walking up and down various stairs and sloped terrains, online detection of obstacles and passing over them
  • Adding the vision, speech and hearing (both in Persian) modules to the new version
  • Developing a customized Software Development Kit (SDK) for the humanoid robot SURENA III, which enables the user to monitor the robot sensors, and to design new scenarios
